Camping at Fahnestock State Park

Fahnestock State Park is very close to Dicktown Road (see related story), and is just 8 miles east of the town of Cold Spring, in the Hudson Valley. There are 80 campsites, and the park boasts that "the beach at Canopus Lake is the jewel of Clarence Fahnestock Memorial Park." We did a short hike the day after camping, and other than the broken bottles scattered around, it was pretty jewel-like.

Lisa and I spent Monday evening at Matt and Lisa's place near Ossining, where I keep the bikes. The next day we were off on the GS. Riding up the Hudson is pretty spectacular, and reminds me a lot of riding Rte. 1 north of San Francisco. Not quite as dramatic, but feels very similar.

We reserved our campsite, set up the tent, then went on another ride around the area. The weather was perfect.

The only drawback to the campground is that it's kind of close to the Taconic State Parkway. Kind of screws with your sense of "getting away from it all" when you can hear cars whizzing down the Parkway.

The bike's all loaded up, and Lisa is getting her helmet and gloves sorted out.

We stopped for lunch in Garrison, which is right across the river from the West Point Military Academy.

The campsite was equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. It also came with some broken glass and bottle caps. I think the maintenance crew hadn't gotten around to cleaning up after the weekend.

Vegetarian franks and beans, anyone?! Mmmm... tofu pups always taste better over an open flame.

Going in for round 2. Mmmm... smokey.

I wasn't supposed to have the bike in the campsite, so I put the green tarp over it. Do you think they'll see the big, honking, yellow reflectors?

Cozy tent site away from the smoke and fire.

Good morning sunshine.

A little oatmeal and coffee, and we were ready for some more motorbiking.

Camping nerd.
